Must see Westfjords – the South – Iceland Photography trip

This is the fifth blog post about my Iceland trip and the fourth about the places I think you must see. In this post, I’ll write about the south of the Westfjords. Check my other post for Reykjavík and Western Iceland, and the eastern part of the Westfjords and the north of the Westfjords. As usual, I’ll probably miss some great places so let me know in the comments!

Going south from Ísafjörður on route 60 you’ll see a lot of great fjords and lovely villages which I can’t list all. Here are the places where you absolutely need to stop.

Dynjandi – Must see

Dynjandi is the largest waterfall in Iceland and is the uppermost waterfall of a series of 7. It’s a very short walk up from the carpark which is just off the main road.

Látrabjarg – Must see

Látrabjarg might be a bit out of the way, but it is certainly worth the drive. It forms the south west part of the Westfjords and is the westernmost part of Iceland. It’s home to millions of birds; it’s Europe largest bird-cliff and up to 440m high. When I was there (end of August) all the puffins had already migrated away, but I still saw some nice Kittiwakes and a lot of Northern Fulmars.

Rauðisandur – Must see

Rauðisandur, the red beach is quite close to Látrabjarg, and if you are as lucky as me, clouds will provide a great spectacle above the 10km red sand beach.

I could have spent hours there just watching the clouds go by and the colours of the beach change.

There are also a couple of natural hot-springs in the area; I sadly remember the names of just one: Hellulaug.
It’s very close to the hotel and camping ground of Flókalundur. Just a bit further to the east and a short walk from the car park and the perfect place to unwind and look over the ocean after putting up your tent.
